Lucinda took over Nurturing Mums this time last June when her son was just 5 months old. How did she make the move from city lawyer to stay at home working mum & running her own business? Find out in our post below!
Q: Congratulations on making it through your first year – tell us how you came about taking over Nurturing Mums?
I was working all sorts of crazy hours as a city lawyer and when my son came along in December 2014 and when he had a stint in intensive care – I felt a bit shaken. At 4 months old, he started losing weight with reflux & other issues. I had a feeling he would really need me and I wanted to be there for him. It was a big decision, but this was the beginning of a new adventure for me and for us as a new family. I had never worked for myself before, but felt passionately that once you’ve had your baby, that is when you need the most support. Nurturing Mums offers practical, non-judgemental advice & support to new mums – something I didn’t think there was much of! I acquired the business in June & launched my first courses in September 2015.
Q: How has the business changed since you took over?
I have been on a mission to keep growing the business, which I am pleased to say is going well. It’s gone from running out of one North London location to 4: East Finchley, Crouch End, Hampstead & Islington. We have also now got our first franchise – Nurturing Mums South Hertfordshire & their first course is starting in St Albans this September. I’m also doing regular talks for parents-to-be for Mamas & Papas – so it’s been great meeting so many new and expectant parents.
Q: How do you fit working in with having a toddler?
It is definitely a juggling act. You may have seem from the post – Living on Oxygen – that my son has been pretty unwell this past year. It’s been incredibly hard to have any sort of structured childcare for him – I’ve relied heavily on family & we recently have a pretty fab au pair who has him also for an hour or so here and there throughout the week. I make the most of nap times & evenings. I can’t say I feel like I’ve got the balance right yet. I still feel like I check my phone too much and should have more structured work time. At the moment my Monday mornings of work are precious. I have a wonderful PA who comes in and helps me get everything together for the week ahead. The rest of the week my work can be quite sporadic and I would like to have a bit more firm working times when my son isn’t with me. There’s no point in attempting to open up the laptop and focus when he’s around – all he wants to do is play!
Q: What does your typical day look like?
I get up at 6.30, which is normally about 30 minutes before my son gets up. This gives me time to shower, run through emails & social media and grab a cup of coffee. We then have breakfast, I give him physiotherapy and play until nap time. At nap time I usually have some lunch and sit down with my laptop for 2 golden hours. Afternoons involve playdates, or my son might pop out for an afternoon walk with my mum so I can get some more work done. My husband comes home in time for my toddler’s dinner and bedtime, so I either do a bit more work, or go and do some exercise & just escape for a bit! We have dinner around 7.30 and settle in for the evening!
Q: What could you not live without?
Caffeine & my phone. I’m a bit of a social media addict….
Q: What’s your advice to anyone looking to make a career change?
Know your market, know what you want to achieve and see if you can start making your dream a reality whilst juggling your current role. It will help you assess if you’re ready to make the leap. I’d also suggest networking – there is nothing better than meeting and collaborating with other mum bosses – it’s empowering!
Q: Where do you see Nurturing Mums in the future?
Hopefully going national – I truly believe all new mums could benefit from practical, non-judgemental support and everyone needs lots of coffee & mum friends!
