We are lucky to have the wonderful guest blog post from fellow mum boss Jenny Leahy from Blindsides, an amazing invention that helps block out that unwanted light that creeps into our little ones’ rooms meaning they often wake up earlier!
Jenny: For me, like most other mums of young children, getting my children to sleep well and until a reasonable time in the morning was one of my ultimate goals. Not only did this mean my little ones would be well rested and happy it meant that, just as importantly, I would be too; if either one of us was feeling tired and grumpy then the day wouldn’t go quite so smoothly.
As parents we do so many things to help ensure that our children sleep well. We keep to a regular, predictable bed time routine and provide a quiet, relaxing environment at the right temperature. In my experience it also helps to make the bedroom as dark as possible but this can be a bit more of a challenge, particularly in the summer months or if you have a streetlight outside of your home.
It was just this challenge of keeping the light out that led to the creation of BlindSides…they do say that necessity is the mother of invention and it was certainly true in this case! I’d just had made to measure blackout blinds fitted in my son’s bedroom and was disappointed to discover that they still let in (a lot) of light at the sides. After a bit of research I realised two things: I was not alone in this discovery and that there didn’t seem to be anything I could buy to remedy the problem (despite the seemingly endless baby products on the market). So I made my own solution with things I found around the house. I became very creative with towels and coat hangers and eventually this morphed into the first rudimentary BlindSides. It was only when my husband saw this ‘prototype’ that he suggested that they could actually be a product…and so BlindSides were born.
That was nearly four years ago and BlindSides are now helping other parents get that much needed extra sleep in the mornings, not to mention helping to provide a dark room even when it’s still light at bed time. I’m fortunate that my children are now pretty good sleepers (hang in there, it does eventually happen for most of us) and one of my main challenges now is balancing raising a family and running a business. This challenge is different for all of us, but I try (mostly successfully) not to let business encroach on precious family time. But when that’s not possible, being able to access emails etc. from my mobile makes it a lot less intrusive than having to take myself off to login to a computer. When it is time to work, it’s also amazing how focused and productive we can become when working hours need to be squeezed in between getting home from the morning school run and dashing off to be outside the school gates when the bell rings at 3 o’ clock.
You can buy blindsides directly from the Blind Sides website & they are also stocked in JoJo Maman Bebe.
