We’re extending a big Nurturing Mums welcome to Vicki and Laura from Hartbeeps, South London who will be running our child development sessions in Blackheath. Vicki is a mum of three and it was through her two youngest children that she came across the magical, crazy, exciting world of Hartbeeps. Laura met Vicki whilst she was setting up for her class in West Wickham. She of course fell in love with the classes with her youngest son as well & not long after that Vicki and Laura joined forces. Hartbeeps create a space in which parents and babies can enjoy special time together through a magical multi-sensory experience that encourages imagination and development.
What do you love about your job?
Vicki – I fell in love with Hartbeeps from the moment I walked into a class with my 6 week old daughter. At the time, I could only describe it as a “Disneyland” for babies! She was completely enthralled from the moment we started and it gave me so much pleasure to spend 45 minutes with her in class, knowing she would love every second!
I now love seeing other new mums in our sessions enjoying our wonderlands with their little ones. You can almost see them relax as they walk in the door and their little ones’ faces light up. It is pure magic and a joy to share!
Laura – I never thought I would be in the position to say, ‘I love my job’ but I really do! It’s so lovely to be able to create an enchanted wonderland where stresses of the outside world disappear & you are taken on a magical adventure with your baby. Hartbeeps creates a supportive, safe place for babies, toddlers & their grown-ups. As a mummy myself, I love being able to give something to other parents in their busy weeks where they can just be with baby & have fun!
What is the most commonly asked question you get asked during your classes?
Vicki – “Is it like this all the time in your house?!” Sadly, it isn’t! Instead, our houses are now overrun with class props and puppets all packed in order ready for sessions. I have to hide them from our children to keep them clean and packed in order! Its hard, but we have to try to separate the fun we share in classes from the job of running the classes.
All our teachers attend one class a week for free with their own children though so we all still get to enjoy the wonder of Hartbeeps as well ☺
Laura – ‘How do you learn all the songs & different sessions? There are so many!’ I suppose when you really enjoy doing something, it makes learning it so much easier! We run a lot of different sessions so it’s not often you will see the same session within 3 terms. From flying frogs into space to being a banana super hero & saving the world or even having a simple ‘baby rave’, Hartbeeps is full of the unexpected which makes classes so much fun for the teacher as well as the grown-ups & children!
What is your top tip for a new mum?
Vicki – Believe in yourself. Trust your instincts. Know you are the best person for the “job’!
It’s often hard at first, especially if you haven’t been involved with children before (like me!). It took me a long time to stop worrying about what I was doing wrong and realise all I needed to do was love and care for my daughter.
….and however hard it seems, I promise it gets easier!
Laura – Don’t try to be perfect! Don’t put pressure on yourself to keep on top of everything at home… go with the flow & be ‘baby led!’
The most important thing is to rest & spend time to bond & enjoy finding your way as a new mummy & getting to know your baby. Every stage goes so quickly – treasure it!
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
Vicki – Spare time??? 😉 I love the weekends and holidays when my husband can join us as well! At the moment, our young and growing family completely dominates everything we do – packing in as many activities and adventures as we can!
My mantra has changed since having a family and growing into the role of Mother and parent. Throw yourself into the role and let it wash over the other things in life, because this time is short, precious and I suspect its what we will think most of when we come to the end of our lives – live it, embrace it, but accept it can also be hard.
Laura – Being at home with my husband and 2 children is very special – The weeks fly by with juggling work, school runs, after school clubs, toddler groups etc – it’s not often we get to stop & be at home, just the 4 of us! Lazy mornings, afternoons playing in the garden & enjoying spending time together without the craziness of the outside world!
What’s the best thing about being a mum?
Vicki – The love you feel. There’s nothing like the love and proximity you have to your children. I’m definitely making the most of cuddling and kissing my son as much as I can, as I know one day he wont let me do it so much.
He’s 2 and recently walked over and said, “Love you Mummy”. It was the first time he’d said it. In that moment, I forgot about the sleepless nights, feeding difficulties, tantrums. I just melted into a pool of total happiness.
Laura – The overwhelming love you feel. You can never imagine life with a baby but then as soon as they arrive you can’t imagine life without them. My eldest daughter is nearly 11 and I have loved every minute of her journey growing into a beautiful young person & now I look forward to seeing my youngest son who is 2 do it all again ☺
What are you looking forward to most about working with Nurturing Mums?
Vicki – I absolutely love the concept of Nurturing Mums. I’m sure I would have benefited so much from a postnatal course with my eldest child. Its so daunting at first, always wondering and questioning if you are doing it right. I really hope we can help to support new Mums in their transition to parenthood and give them confidence to know they are doing an amazing job!!
Laura – I wish there had been Nurturing Mums when my youngest was born. Everyone tells you what to expect regarding the birth & how ‘to breath’ & what you should & shouldn’t eat throughout pregnancy but then once the baby is born you are left to your own devices & that world can be very lonely at times.
I can’t wait to work alongside Nurturing Mums & be able to offer new parents a safe place where they can learn to enjoy & have fun with their little ones even after only have 3 hours’ sleep! I promise, it can be done!!
