Mel is our new Islington baby development expert & we are very excited to have her on board. Mel currently runs Kindermusik sessions in Islington at Whittington Park Community Association, N19 every Friday morning, 9:30 am. Mel can’t wait to put a smile on the babies’ faces with her fun Kindermusik taster as part of the baby development session she runs with Nurturing Mums Islington!
What do you love about your job?
I love to be able to be part of a child’s first stage of life’s development. Knowing that I can make a difference in this “tiny” new human being is truly amazing.
I love each and every smile in a baby’s face when they come to class and show the joy of being part of the magical moments that spontaneously happen during those 35 minutes of learning through fun!!!
And all this associated to all the different stages of development they go through within they first year of life, makes it even more incredible!
By the end of the course, which lasts for the whole year round, it is even more gratifying to see how much babies have grown and developed, moving towards what I call, “The second season of life – the toddler season!”
Knowing that I was able to contribute to it and realizing I was also part of this important process is a wonderful feeling!
What do you most commonly get asked about babies’ development?
Some parents worry if their child is not being part of an activity as active as the other ones, and they get concerned if the child is enjoying it. So by the end of the class they usually come and ask my opinion about it and/or show some concerns related to how shy their kid is.
So what I always say to them is that no kids or families are alike. Some kids are more of an observer then a joiner, for example.
Being more of an observer could mean that they are shy or “slow to warm up” and they are more cautious in new situations or with unfamiliar people. In some cases it is not part of their personalities to be put on the spot. They watch and then when no one else is watching them they like to experiment, but that does not mean your child is not enjoying or not absorbing information…
In some cases, in later stages of life, some observers can know better then a joiner, if that makes sense?
Kindermusik is a child centered and parent orientated programme, which means that your kid does not have to join in every single activity of the class. They are free to discover and explore.
I like to think they are a bit like us, sometimes we do not feel like dancing but we would love to do dome singing!!
This is why my classes are filled with diversity 😉
What is your top tip for a new mum?
To me the most important thing is to try not to absorb “all” the different histories and different experiences that other Mums or Grand-parents have had. Each child is an individual and has got a different personality. What works for some, definitely won’t work for another. Then what tends to happen is that we get very overwhelmed and confusing losing ourselves in all this emotion and not being sure what is right or wrong, or lets say, what works best for our little ones…
Remember: you are your child’s first and best teacher!
No one can do a better job then yourself, so go ahead with your beliefs and trust yourself!
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
In my spare time I love to play some piano.
It’s either that or have some bonding with my wonderful family that I love very much!
What’s the best thing about being a mum?
To me the best thing about being a Mum is finding out our capability of loving in an unconditional way, in a way that it has never been felt before.
In a way where, even after two-hour night’s sleep, and your little one wakes up and smiles at you, your heart melts in happiness and love!
Why do you enjoy working with Nurturing Mums?
I think Nurturing Mums is wonderful!
The idea of getting so much information and advice in such an overwhelming and fragile moment of our lives and being in touch with other new mums that are going through exactly the same process as you is great!
I love the name and think it couldn’t be better described what you do during the sessions!
I wish I had gone to a Nurturing Mums class when my little one was born!!
