Kerry is our new Islington sleep expert & we are very excited to have her on board. Kerry has over 17 years’ experience working with babies, young children and their families from the UK to across the globe.
Kerry works with you to improve your family’s sleep with an approach that is gentle, holistic and tailored completely to your family and their needs. When she isn’t working with Nurturing Mums, she runs Kerry Cares Parenting. Kerry’s support is friendly, approachable and above all non-judgemental!
What do you love about your job?
I love talking to parents and hearing their own personal stories and journeys, each and every one is so different! At the end of working with me we always have a big chat and I love showing families just how much progress they have made and how it is all down to them. Just hearing how different their voices sound from when we first spoke is enough to tell me what an impact a good night’s sleep can make! Knowing that I had a little role in this and leaving an imprint on their lives is such a good feeling.
The other best bit for me is showing parents that you can gently improve their sleep without training them or using controlled crying and that there is an approach that suits every family.
I love it when families contact me after to give me an update on how they are doing.
What do you most commonly get asked about children’s sleep?
I get asked SO many questions all of the time but the most commons ones are:
Is this normal? Am I doing it right?
Am I making a rod for my own back or encouraging bad habits?
When will they sleep through the night?
They stop when I comfort them, are they manipulating me?
Are you sure I don’t need to sleep train or use controlled crying?
My new-born doesn’t want to be put down, am I doing something wrong?
When will this regression end?
What is your top tip for a new mum?
Oh it is so hard to pick just one! I feel the most important thing to remember is every family and baby is beautifully unique. Issues only become an issue if they are a problem for you and your family. There isn’t anything you should or must be doing and if it feels wrong it is probably not the right thing for your family, follow those instincts! Other people will always have an opinion on how your baby should sleep (yes even the postman at times!) but the only person’s opinion that matters is the parents, you are your baby’s expert!
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
When I am not working with my lovely families, I can be found dancing at a gig, hanging out with my husband and friends, enjoying delicious food and drink or stomping around East London training for my upcoming half marathon.
Why do you enjoy working with Nurturing Mums?
Nurturing Mums is such a special and supportive group and it shares the same gentle and nurturing ethos as me. I really enjoy meeting and chatting with all the lovely Mums and their gorgeous little ones whilst supporting and helping them to improve their family’s sleep.
You will get to meet Kerry on our Islington Course from April 2016 onwards!
